Generic Drugs: Explore the Alternative

Many people looking to combat the high cost of prescription drugs are turning to generic drugs. They’re safe, effective and may save you money. Plus, they’re FDA approved.

A generic drug is the equivalent of a brand-name drug in dosage, safety, strength, quality, performance, route of administration and intended use. It’s also less expensive. Because generics don’t require the same research and development as was necessary for the brand-name drug, the cost is less to bring a generic drug to market.

Switching to a Generic Drug
If you’re interested in switching from your current brand-name drug to a generic, talk to your provider to see if it’s right for you. In most cases, providers will agree to prescribe a generic drug, if one is available.

Because generics have the same active ingredients as the equivalent brand-name drug, most states allow pharmacists to dispense a generic substitute. Simply ask your pharmacist if you can switch to a generic drug.

Provider Permission to Substitute Generics
You may also request a generic at the pharmacy if your provider marked “may substitute” on your prescription or left the area blank.

Save Money With Over-the-Counter Drugs
Did you know you could save as much as 94 percent by purchasing an over-the-counter drug (OTC) instead of filling a prescription? Many commonly prescribed drugs are now available over the counter at a savings to you.
